Instrument Calibration Tracking

Calibration tracking ensures every measuring instrument — callipers, micrometers, dial indicators, height gauges — gives an accurate reading. Without up-to-date calibration, a “good” reading from a drifted instrument leads to out-of-tolerance parts. Calibration traceability is a quality cornerstone.

Calibration, verification: the terms

Calibration compares the instrument to a reference standard and documents the deviation. Verification confirms the instrument remains within its operating tolerances. In the workshop, the word “calibration” is often used loosely for the whole periodic-check process.

Why track due dates?

• An instrument drifts with use and knocks.
• A false reading invalidates an entire batch of parts.
• Quality standards require dated traceability.
• In training, apprentices need to learn that an instrument must be checked, not just used.

What a good tracking system records

For each instrument: identifier, type, range, last calibration, next due date, result, person responsible and location. An automatic reminder prevents oversights, and an overdue instrument can be flagged as unusable.
