Lean Management in the Workshop
Lean management is a continuous-improvement approach that aims to eliminate waste and create value with less effort. In the mechanical workshop, it relies on concrete tools — 5S, SQCDP, OEE, Kaizen, A3 — that structure daily work and progress.
The 5S: an organised workshop
The 5S organise the workspace: Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu (Standardise), Shitsuke (Sustain). A 5S workshop saves time and keeps tools easy to find — an excellent habit to pass on to apprentices.
SQCDP: daily visual management
SQCDP tracks six dimensions: Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery, People. A short meeting, often daily, around a board where each letter is green or red, makes it possible to deal with deviations quickly.
OEE: measuring machine performance
OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), called TRS in French, combines availability, performance and quality into a single indicator of a machine's output.
Kaizen and A3: solving problems for good
Kaizen is continuous improvement in small steps, proposed by the people who do the work. A3 is a structured problem-solving method that fits on a single page: context, root-cause analysis, action plan, results.
Lean in MECAFLOW
MECAFLOW includes a Lean suite (5S, SQCDP, OEE, Kaizen, A3) built for the workshop. Paired with the wall TV view, it delivers lively visual management. For a school, it's also an excellent way to teach continuous improvement using real cases.
Frequently asked questions
What is Lean management in the workshop?
It's a continuous-improvement approach that eliminates waste and creates more value with less effort, using tools such as 5S, SQCDP, OEE, Kaizen and A3.
What do the 5S stand for?
Sort (Seiri), Set in order (Seiton), Shine (Seiso), Standardise (Seiketsu), Sustain (Shitsuke): five steps to organise the workspace for the long term.
What is OEE (or TRS)?
OEE, the Overall Equipment Effectiveness rate, combines availability, performance and quality into a single indicator of a machine's real output.
Does MECAFLOW offer Lean tools?
Yes. MECAFLOW includes a Lean suite (5S, SQCDP, OEE, Kaizen, A3) built for the workshop and paired with a wall TV view for visual management.
MECAFLOW, a clear view of the workshop
MECAFLOW is the Swiss workshop management platform for vocational mechanical engineering schools and industry. Non-invasive (QR + PIN, no wiring), made in Switzerland (data in Europe), free for schools.
